THERMAL POWER station "Al Shemal" is situated on the river
Tigris, 20 km south of the town of Mosul in Iraq. The total
capacity is 2,100 MW and it consists of 6 blocks, each of
350 MW capacity.
§ The first stage of the construction included four blocks.
§ The main plant consists of a boiler (on crude oil and natural
gas) and turbines (condenser type with river water cooling).
Each boiler is connected to one turbine.
§ The boiler plant consists of a vertical boiler with natural
circulation and steam pre-heating, and its own chimney.
§ The turbine plant is of condenser type with one pre-heating
and 7 reductions for heating of the main condensate and feed
water, out of which one is on the high pressure
cylindre, three on the medium and three on the low pressure cylinder. The pail of
the low pressure turbine is with two flows of symmetrical type.
The turbine and the generator are placed on the same level.
§ The condenser plant consists of one surface condenser with
double flow and auxiliary equipment. The cold water flow is
10,000 l/s.
§ The basic characteristics are:
- total area of the complex 100 ha,
- total capacity 2,100 MW,
- 6 blocks 350 MW each,
- type of fuel: crude oil/natural gas,
- maximum flow of cooling water 10,800 1/s,
- cooling water temperature: max 35°, processing 25°, min 15°,
- other buildings: administrative office building, restaurant, clinic, water tower, mosque.
