THE BACKBONE of the old city core consists of Knez Mihailova
Street and the area of Republic Square. Before it was
reconstructed, this area had been used for pedestrians and
vehicular traffic with all its negative aspects. Besides
external unsatisfactory appearance of the setting, the
underground installations (water supply pipes and sewage, electrical and
telephone network) were also in bad condition.
§ The scope of the project covers 21,300
m2 of the developed area, out of which Knez Mihailova Street for pedestrians only
covers 13,500 m2, and a part of Republic Square 7,800
m2
(excluding future undernround station). Out of the total
investment expenditures, 60% was used for the renovation of old and
building of new infra-structure as well as for the installation of the
remote herring pipeline.
§ The project was prepared and realised following the principle of total design, starting with
walking surfaces and the elements of urban equipment, gully gratings, manhole covers, and the other elements needed for pedestrian zone, including unique items like drinking fountains, wells, fountains, and commemorative features of the streets.
§ As far as the modelling is concerned, the combining factor was applied forms and materials. The walking surfaces and low or massive elements of the urban equipment were made in
granite, and standing or slender elements in tarnished bronze. The applied forms are associated in their unity with "cold" - flat and "warm" - round surfaces.
§ Special attention was paid to landscaping, planting of trees and flowers in order to achieve
aesthetic and ecological balance. The system of the night lighting consists of rows of candelabra 3.5 m high with additional illumination from shop windows and flashing advertisement signs.
§ The surface waters are drained by means of a channel in the
middle of the streets and adequate sewage system.
